Thirty-four isolates of fungi (2 from man and 32 from bamboo rats in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region) have been identified on the basis of their morphological and cultural characteristics. IMI 68794 (Penicillium marneffei, ex-type), ATCC 24100 and ATCC 10438 (originally identified as Penicillium marneffei and P. diversum var. aureum respectively but were both reclassified as Penicillium primulinum by Pitt because of their yellow mycelial growth on MEA) were used for comparison. Despite some striking differences in cultural features (many isolates develop yellow encrusted hyphae which influence the colony appearance), all 34 isolates have been identified as Penicillium marneffei Segretain et al. because of the detail of their penicilli, the purplered pigmentation, and the formation of yeast-like cells at 37℃. The morphological characters of ATCC 24100 conform to those of P. marneffei as well. Therefore, ATCC 24100 should still be retained as P. marneffei. ATCC 10438, although it also develops ;ellow encrusted hyphae, possesses a quite different pattern of penicilli. It does not produce a purplered pigment, nor does it grow at 37℃.
