Comparative studies among subcultures of types of Cunninghamella polymorpha, C. phaeospora. C.brunnea and their related species have revealed that the three taxa should be accepted as distinct species. Characteristics for distinguishing these species are discussed. Redescriptions and reillustrations are provided. One of the nine strains of C.polymorpha isolated from materials collected in China produces abundant zygospores when mated with the other Chinese strains as well as with the type culture of this species. This is the first record of C.polymorpha in China and is also the first report of its teleomorphic state since its publication.

More than 2000 samples, including soils, plant debris, animal dung and other substrates, were collected from 22 provinces in China during this study. About 220 strains of Mortierella species were isolated by use of the soil-plate method for soil samples and the direct method for other samples. In the classification of the genus, the taxonomic scheme proposed by Gams (1970, 1977) was basically followed with some modifications. Haplosporangium is recognized as a separate genus. Twenty two species and three varieties, including one new species and one new variety (Mortierella wuyishanensis sp. nov. and M. hyalina (Harz) W. Gams var. subtilissima var. nov.) were identified. Fourteen taxa, i.e. Mortierella gemmifera M. Ellis, M. horticola Linnem., M. humilis Linnem., M. hyalina (Harz) W. Gams, M. indica B.S. Mehrotra, M. indohii C.Y. Chien, M. jenkinii (A.L. Sm.) Naumov, M. minutissima Tiegh. var. dubia Linnem., M. mutabilis Linnem., M. parvispora Linnem., M. ramanniana (A. Moller) Linnem. var. angulispora (Naumov) Linnem., M. reticulata Tiegh. & G. Le Monn., M. verrucosa Linnem. and M. verticillata Linnem. are new records for China. Some taxonomic problems and criteria for differentiating species and varieties within the genus are discussed. Keys to subgenera, sections, species and varieties of Mortierella in China are given. Descriptions, line drawings, substrata and distributions in this country are provided for each taxon.

Based on an analysis of a genome library of the rice blast fungus, Pyricularia oryzae, a set of clones containing repeated sequences of P. oryzae was identified. Of them, POR6 and POR7 were proved highly polymorphic and random distributed in P. oryzae genomes. When POR6 was used as probe in DNA fingerprinting to investigate pathotypes of rice blast fungus races, distinctive genome-specific profiles were observed. We have analyzed the relationship between the pathotypes and fingerprints of nine blast fungus isolates from Japan and China. The result indicated that the percentage of similar hybridization bands (Sxy) in POR6-DNA fingerprints of any two isolates are positively related to the number of rice cultivars which can be infected by these two isolates. POR6 may become a useful probe in study of diversity and phylogenetic relationship among races of rice blast fungus.

In this paper, sixteen species of the genus Pseudocercospora found in China are reported. Three new species (P. clernatoclethrae, P. curculiginis, P. premnicola), eight new combinations (P. chloranthi, P. cydoniae, P. fukuokaensis, P. hymenodictyonis, P. kadsurae, P. nojimae, P. spiraeicola, P. sphaeriiformis) and three new records for China are included here. Latin diagnoses, descriptions and illustrations of the new species are given. The specimens examined are deposited in HMAS.

In a survey of nematophagous fungi in China from 1989 to 1991, 900 isolates were studied from over 300 soil samples, from which 29 genera and 57 species of nematophagous fungi were identified and described. Results show that 10 species among 4 genera and 28 species of nematode-trapping fungi, 3 species among 4 genera and 4 species of endoparasites as well as 3 genera and 10 species among 22 genera and 25 species of opportunistic fungi associated with the cyst of Heterodera glycines are new to China.

Neohaploidization of dikaryon cultures of Pleurotus was performed using oxgall agar techniques. Neohaplont isolates were monokaryotic and lacked clamp connections. These neohaplont isolates were mated with single-spore tester strains of formerly identified Pleurotus collections, and neohaplonts from each parent dikaryon were found to be compatible with tester strains of only ope species. Such a process appears valuable as a means of identifying dikaryon Pleurotus cultures, and may be as useful for other fungal groups.
