A new variety of Cunninghamella phaeospora was isolated from the forest soil of Shennongjia, Hubei Province, and named Cunninghamella phaeospora var. multiverticillata var. nov. Similarities and dissimilarities of var. multiverticillata to var. phaeospora as well as to other related taxa of the same genus are discussed. Imperfect mating between var. multiverticillata Cu137(+) and var. phaeospora Cu136(-) resulted in formation of gametangia only; while that between var. multiverticillata Cu137(+) and var. phaeospora CBS 692.68 (-), culture derived from the type of the species, resulted in scanty development of zygosporangia which were in the majority of cases empty, with only four zygospores found in more than one hundred of them.
