Abstract

The resources and diversity of wood-inhabiting macrofungi in the Taihang Mountains were studied. About 1 400 specimens were collected from Beijing, Hebei Province, Henan Province and Shanxi Province, and 306 species belonging to 2 phyla, 4 classes, 12 orders, 49 families and 147 genera were identified on the basis of morphology and phylogenetic analysis. Species of Polyporales and Hymenochaetales are dominant, accounting for over 74% of all known species of wood-inhabiting macrofungi in the Taihang Mountains. The important families are Polyporaceae, Hymenochaetaceae, Irpicaceae, Phanerochaetaceae and Steccherinaceae, with 55, 52, 16, 16 and 15 species, respectively. A checklist of these wood-inhabiting macrofungi is provided and the host substrates of each species are listed following the species. Fallen trunks and branches are the most important substrates. Quercus is the favorite host for wood-inhabiting macrofungi in the Taihang Mountains, and Betula, Populus, Pinus and Salix are secondary.

INTRODUCTION

Wood-inhabiting macrofungi include polypores, agarics, and corticioid, hydnoid, colloid and carbonaceous fungal species growing in different forest ecosystems. They are closely related to forest structures and play important roles in maintaining energy flow and nutrient cycle of forest ecosystems (Wei & Dai 2004). Diversity of wood-inhabiting macrofungi has been constantly studied in the northeast (Dai 2010a; Yuan et al. 2021, 2022), southwest (Si & Dai 2016), north (Dai et al. 2006; Wu et al. 2017; Wu et al. 2021), and south (Cui et al. 2010; Dai et al. 2011; Dai 2012a; Yuan & Dai 2012; Wu et al. 2020; Wang et al. 2021, 2022; Mao et al. 2023) of China. Wu et al. (2022b) published a comprehensive report on wood-inhabiting macrofungi occurring in botanical gardens of China. Detailed species checklists of some specific groups of wood-inhabiting macrofungi in whole country were also published (Dai 2009, 2010b; Cui et al. 2019; Wu et al. 2019; Dai et al. 2021; Wu et al. 2022a). However, the knowledge of the fungi concerned is still poor in the Taihang Mountains, northern China.

The Taihang Mountains are located in 34°34ʹ−40°43ʹN and 110°14ʹ−114°33ʹE, dividing the Loess Plateau and the North China Plain, with notable climate and vegetation differences on the east and west sides. Rocky mountainous areas are dominant, with a thin soil layer. Nature forests are mostly in nature reserves and forest parks, where our investigations were mostly carried out. In the present paper, 306 wood-inhabiting macrofungi have been identified, and a critical checklist, including substrates and collecting data of each species, is provided.

1 MATERIALS AND METHODS

The data are mostly based on our investigations, sampling and observations. Extensive field trip inventories were made in Beijing, Hebei, Henan and Shanxi Province during the recent 10 years, and about 1 400 samples were collected. Species identification is based on morphology and phylogenetic analysis, and the voucher specimens are deposited in the fungarium of Beijing Forestry University (BJFU) and Experimental Centre of Forestry in North China, Chinese Academy of Forestry.

3 DISCUSSION

About 1 400 specimens were collected from the Taihang Mountains, and 306 wood-inhabiting macrofungi belonging to 2 phyla, 4 classes, 12 orders, 49 families and 147 genera were identified. A total of 227 species belongs to Polyporales and Hymenochaetales, accounting for over 74% of all known wood-inhabiting macrofungi in this area. The important families are Polyporaceae, Hymenochaetaceae, Irpicaceae, Phanerochaetaceae and Steccherinaceae, with 55, 52, 16, 16 and 15 species, respectively.

Among 306 known wood-inhabiting species, 181 are polypores, 44 are corticioid fungi, 29 are hydnoid, 26 are agarics, 23 are colloid and 3 are carbonaceous ascomycetes. The polypores are the most important wood-inhabiting macrofungi in the Taihang Mountains, but the diversity is far below as compared with that in northeast China (300 species, Dai 2010a), eastern Himalayas and Southwest China (391 species, Si & Dai 2016), South China (500 species, Wu et al. 2020) and Hainan Province (702 species, Ma et al. 2022). The ratio of corticioid species (over 14%) in this area is rather substantial possibly because of the lower humidity. In addition, 61 species are wood-decaying pathogens (Dai et al. 2000; Dai 2012b), accounting for about 20% of all known wood-inhabiting macrofungi.

Specifically, 256 and 25 species grow on angiosperm and gymnosperm trees, accounting for 83.7% and 8.2% of known wood-inhabiting species, respectively; 25 species occur on both angiosperm and gymnosperm trees; 32 species (accounting for 10.5%) cause brown rot, much lower in number than white rot species because of the gymnosperm preference of brown-rot fungi.

Habitually, 46, 16, 96, 191, 8, 11 and 4 species grow on living tree, dead standing tree, fallen branch, fallen trunk, rotten wood, stump and root, respectively. Fallen trunk and branch are the most important substrates. Quercus is the favorite host for wood-inhabiting macrofungi in the Taihang Mountains, with 54 species occurred, secondarily Betula (51 species), Populus (42 species), Pinus (28 species) and Salix (23 species).

A contribution to Porogramme (Polyporaceae, Agaricomycetes) and related genera

IMA Fungus, 14: 5

The polypores with shallow pores from tropical Asia and America are studied. Our molecular phylogeny based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), the large subunit nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nLSU), the translation elongation factor 1-α gene (TEF1), and the largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB1) demonstrates six clades are formed among Porogramme and related genera. Two new genera, Cyanoporus and Pseudogrammothele, are established, and the six clades represent Porogramme, Cyanoporus, Grammothele, Epithele, Theleporus, and Pseudogrammothele, respectively. The molecular clock analyses estimate the divergence times of the six clades based on a dataset (ITS + LSU + TEF1 + RPB1 + RPB2), and we recognize the mean stem ages of the six genera are earlier than 50 Mya. Three new species in Porogramme were morphologically and phylogenetically confirmed, and they are described as P. austroasiana, P. cylindrica, and P. yunnanensis. Phylogenetic analysis shows that type species of Tinctoporellus and Porogramme are nested in the same clade, and Tinctoporellus is treated as a synonym of Porogramme. Based on our phylogeny, twelve new combinations are proposed, and the differences between the new species and similar or related species are discussed.

A new contribution to Megasporoporia sensu lato: six new species and three new combinations

Frontiers in Microbiology, 13: 1046777

Megasporoporia sensu lato has recently been intensively studied in China and South America, and four independent clades representing four genera have been recognized phylogenetically. In this study, more samples, mostly from subtropical and tropical Asia, Oceania, and East Africa, are analyzed. A phylogeny based on a 4-gene dataset of sequences (ITS + nLSU + mtSSU + tef) has confirmed the presence of four genera in Megasporoporia sensu lato: Jorgewrightia, Mariorajchenbergia, Megasporia, and Megasporoporia sensu stricto. Six new species, Jorgewrightia austroasiana, Jorgewrightia irregularis, Jorgewrightia tenuis, Mariorajchenbergia subleucoplaca, Megasporia olivacea, and Megasporia sinuosa, are described based on morphology and phylogenetic analysis. Three new combinations are proposed, viz. Jorgewrightia kirkii, Mariorajchenbergia epitephra, and Mariorajchenbergia leucoplaca. To date, 36 species of Megasporoporia sensu lato are accepted and an identification key to these species is provided. In addition, the identification of Dichomitus amazonicus, Dichomitus cylindrosporus, and Megasporoporia hexagonoides is discussed.

The ecological function of wood-inhabiting fungi in forest ecosystem

Chinese Journal of Applied Ecology, 15: 1935-1938 (in Chinese)

[本文引用: 1]

Wood-inhabiting fungi are one of the most important parts of forest ecosystem, and play an important role in degrading the wood in forest ecosystem. The major species of these fungi include the groups of Aphyllophorales (Basidiomycota),Discomycetes (Ascomycota) and some imperfect fungi. They have the ability to degrade cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin of wood.Three type of wood decaying have been found,i.e.,white rot, brown rot and soft rot. Many other organisms of forest ecosystem have symbiosis relationship with wood-decaying fungi.Wood-inhabiting fungi could offer the nutrition for many insects and birds, and spores of many wood-rotting species are spread by some insects. The high biodiversity of wood-decaying fungi is one of the important factors for the health of forest ecosystem.

Background: Polypores are an important group of wood-decaying fungi and have important ecological functions and economic values. The unique geographical structure and complex vegetation types in China provide abundant substrates for the growth of polypores. Although the taxonomy of polypores has been well studied in China, few comparative studies on the diversity and flora of polypores among different climatic zones has been performed. This study is intended to compare the florae and populations of polypores in multiple forest zones with different climates and vegetations, and will provide the basis for the protection of species diversity and the development of application potential of polypores.
Methods: In this study, we comparatively analyzed the polypore species, ecological habits and floral characteristics in the Altai Mountains, the Qinling Mountains and the Nanling Mountains which are respectively located in boreal, temperate and subtropical zones in China.
Results: A total of 287 poroid wood-decaying fungal species belonging to 107 genera, 29 families, and 8 orders were obtained from the three mountain ranges. Of these species, 84, 132 and 160 were found in the Altai Mountains, the Qinling Mountains and the Nanling Mountains, respectively, and the community was dominated by families Polyporaceae and Hymenochaetaceae. In the generic and species levels, 25 genera and 14 species were common in the three mountain ranges. Floristic analysis found that polypores in the Altai Mountains and the Qinling Mountains were dominated by the cosmopolitan and the northern temperate elements, while polypores in the Nanling Mountains were dominated by the cosmopolitan and the pantropical taxa. In terms of host preference, polypores in the Altai Mountains preferentially grow on gymnosperms over angiosperms, while the opposite was true in the Qinling Mountains and Nanling Mountains. In the two rotting types caused by polypores, the species number of white rot polypores increased, but that of the brown rot decreased, gradually from boreal to subtropical zones.
Conclusion: Climate and vegetation types are the major influencing factors on the flora composition of polypores, based on the analysis of species diversity, host preference and decaying type of polypores in the three mountains.

Phaeolus schweinitzii (Fr.) Pat. was originally described in Europe and is considered a common forest pathogen on conifers in the Northern Hemisphere. Our molecular phylogeny based on samples from China, Europe, and North America confirms that P. schweinitzii is a species complex, including six taxa. P. schweinitzii sensu stricto has a distribution in Eurasia; the samples from Northeast and Southwest China are distantly related to P. schweinitzii sensu stricto, and two new species are described after morphological, phylogenetic, and geographical analyses. The species growing on Larix, Picea, and Pinus in Northeast China is described as Phaeolus asiae-orientalis. Another species mostly occurring on Pinus yunnanensis in Southwest China is Phaeolus yunnanensis. In addition, three taxa distributed in North America differ from P. schweinitzii sensu stricto. Phaeolus tabulaeformis (Berk.) Pat. is in Southeast North America, “P. schweinitzii-1” in Northeast North America, and “P. schweinitzii-2” in western North America.
