Abstract:

The objective of this study was to reveal the effect of Viola yedoensis plant aqueous extracts and decompositions on the germination, seedling growth of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) and Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) in petri dishes by adopting indoor bioassay. The results showed that the aqueous extracts from Viola yedoensis had significant inhibition effects on the synthesis effect (SE) of germination and seedling growth of Kentucky bluegrass and Tall fescue, and the inhibition effects were concentration dependent. The decomposed liquid of Viola yedoensis had significant inhibition effect on the SE of germination and seedling growth of Kentucky bluegrass. The decomposed liquid promoted the SE of Tall fescue at low concentrations, whereas inhibited it at high concentrations. The aqueous extracts of Viola yedoensis had stronger inhibition on both Kentucky bluegrass and Tall fescue, and the inhibition effect of Viola yedoensis on Kentucky bluegrass was stronger than the inhibition on Tall fescue. Therefore, Tall fescue should be a preferred species when a new lawn is established in the place having a common weed-Viola yedoensis.

Key words: Viola yedoensis, Kentucky bluegrass, Tall fescue, Allelopathic potential
