Rhizomucor variabilis var. regularior Zheng & G.-q. Chen, a new variety of Rhizomucor variabilis Zheng & G.-q. Chen reported in 1991, is described and also found to be non-thermophilic, as well as a causative agent of a human primary cutaneous infection of a patient without an underlying disease. Common and distinguishing characteristics between var. regularior and var. variablis are detailed. A key to all the accepted taxa in Rhizomucor is provided.

The known species of Scutellinia in China are reviewed based on specimen examinations and literature work. The related taxonomic and nomenclatural problems are discussed. Among 17 previously recorded Scutellinia names 10 species are included. Six new Chinese records, S. chiangmaiensis, S. crucipila, S. nigrohirtula, S. patagonica, S. pennsylvanica, and S. vitreola, are reported with discussions. Geneosperma geneosporum forma guangxiense is described as new.

The internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) of nuclear rDNA was amplified by PCR from total DNA extracted from sublecanorine apothecia of Lasallia papulosa (Ach.) Llano and L. rossica Dombr. lacking algal cell, and their sequences were determined. A systematic analysis based on a combination of the molecular and morphological characters with chemical data and distribution patterns is given.

In continuation of the previous studies on rust fungi from eastern rimland of Qinghai- Xizang (Tibet) Plateau, the present paper gives an account of the morphological characters of an unusual puccinioid rust collected on Rubus pileatus Focke from western Sichuan. Generic affinity is unassured. The rust, which is here described as new, is assigned to the genus Arthuriornyces (A. rubicola sp. nov.) tentatively.

A new species, Ustilago deyeuxiae L. Guo on Deyeuxia arundinacea (L.) Beauv., is described. U. deyeuxiae is close to U. scrobiculata Liro from which it differs in having more complete and higher ustilospore reticulations. New to China are: 1) Ustilago oxadalis Ellis & Tracy on Oxalis corniculata L., 2) Ustilago polygoni-alati Thimm. & Pavgi on Polygonurn nepalense Meisn., and 3) Urocystis melicae (Lagerheim & Liro) Zundel on Melica radula Fr. A revised description of Ustilago polygoni-alati is given.

By selecting from a genomic library of rice blast fungus, Pyricularia oryzae, we have cloned a genome specific and dispersed repeated sequence named POR6, which can be used to fingerprint various kinds of rice blast pathotypes. In this study, 6 isolates from Japan and 26 isolates from northern China were analyzed using POR6 as a probe. Twentytwo of northern China isolates were assigned to 8 lineages by evaluating the percentage of similar hybridization bands (Sxy) of each pairwise isolates. Some blast isolates maintained in our laboratory were proven to be varied with subsequent culturing in their pathotypes identified by the traditional method. When POR6 was used as a probe, two isolates showed variations in EcoRV digested DNA fingerprints among their asexual generations.

Two new species of Monacrosporium with fusiform conidia are described and illustrated. Monacrosporium longiphorum> sp..nov. produces much high conidiophores with conidia 3- to 4-septate, 39-65 (54) μm long and 13-22 (18) μm wide. Conidia of Monacrosporium microscaphoides sp. nov. are mainly 2-septate, 23-39 (29.5) μm long and 8-16 (12) μm wide.
