Abstract: The effects of different seeding rates combined with N fertilizer and harvest time on theyield and quality of oat-pea mixture were studied on the border of crop and range regions in North Chinafrom Apri1 to September in 1998.The results showed that forage yield and the contents of CP,NDF andADF significantly varied with seeding rates. The optimum yield of forage gained in oat monoculture, andoat made a major contribution to forage yield in oat-pea mixture. With increasing the proportion of pea,for-age CP tended to increase, but NDF and ADF declined. With nitrogen available in soil, application N willhave no significant effect on forage yield and quality. However, the pea-oat mixture gave best performancein optimum rate of N fertilizer. The optimal harvest time was from late milk to soft dough stage of oat andlower pods of pea well filled. The optimal seeding rate was 5O% oat+ 5O%pea,both the forage yield andquality were better in this treatment.
