Abstract: To investigate the responses of microbes on the surfaces of Italian ryegrass to environmental stress, this study compared the effects of four drought stress levels (control, mild, moderate, and severe), three ambient relative humidity (RH) (50%RH, 70%RH, and 90%RH), two temperatures (15℃ and 25℃), and three photoperiods (12 h, 16 h, and 22 h) on the count of microbes on the surfaces of Italian ryegrass. The results indicated that the count of lactic acid bacteria on the surfaces of Italian ryegrass showed a firstly significant decrease and then an increase (P<0.05), while the count of mold and yeast showed a significant decrease (P<0.05) with the extension of drought time. In contrast, increasing ambient humidity significantly increased the count of lactic acid bacteria on the surfaces of Italian ryegrass, while also increasing the abundance of other microorganisms (excluding yeast). Except for lactic acid bacteria, the microbial quantities on the surfaces of Italian ryegrass planted at 15℃ and 25℃ were significantly different (P<0.05). The count of lactic acid bacteria on the surfaces of Italian ryegrass showed a trend of first significantly increasing and then decreasing with the extension of the photoperiod, but other microbes were not significant change. In summary, 90%RH, and a 16 h photoperiod were the most favorable condition for the survival and reproduction of lactic acid bacteria, and mild drought stress reduced the count of mold and yeast on the surfaces of Italian ryegrass.
