Abstract: The experiment was one of the systematincally studied at Shennei alfalfa TrialArea, Wudi County, Shandong province. The first-cut alfalfa was harvested at full blcom period.Itwas baled at various moisture contents (from 30 to 8%).The influence of rainfall on alfalfawholoplant, stem and leaf .was studied and the differences between traditional baling and highmoisture baling on CP, yield and DM yield were compared. The results are shown as followed: 1.With the reduced moisture content, the ratio of stem to leaf increased significantly(P<0.01), aswell as the loss rate of leaf.CP dropped and NDF and ADF rose dramatically (P< 0.01).There isno difference in ash content.2.Rainfall had a great influence on hay making.CP of raindrenchedhay was lower significantly than that of nonrain-drenched hay while NDF and ADF of the formerwas much higher than the latter one at the almost same moisture level. However, CP, NDF andADF of the rain-drenched leaf had no significant difference with those of nonrain-drenched leaf (P>0.05).Neither did the composition of the both stems(P > 0.05).3.The yield of hay baled athigh moisture was 1O7kg/mu more than that of traditional baled hay, dry matter was 44- 9kg/muhigher and crude protein was 12.7kg/mu higher.
