Abstract:

Astragalus variabilis and Oxytropis glabra are the most poisonous weeds in Inner Mongolia, and they do a huge damage in local livestock industry. In order to determine the effects of locoweed occurrence on the soil properties of A. variabilis and O. glabra habitats in desert steppe, soil physical and chemical properties in occurrence and non-occurrence plots were measured by field samples and indoor analyses. Results showed that there was no significant difference in soil texture, porosity, water content and bulk density between occurrence plots and control plots of both locoweeds, whereas the soil alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen (N) contents of occurrence plots significantly increased that of compared control plots. Additionally, the occurrence plots of O. glabra exhibited the increase of available phosphorus (P) and the decrease of available potassium (K). Though both A. variabilis and O. glabra are distributed in the desert grassland of Tengri town in Alashan Zuoqi, the soil properties of their habitats have significant difference. A. variabilis grows in the soil with higher sand content than O. glabra, but the soil water, alkali-hydrolyzable N, available P, available K, organic matter contents and pH value of A. variabilis habitat are significantly lower than that of O. glabra. Both A. variabilis and O. glabra do not cause the notable changes of soil physical properties. Compared with O. glabra weeds, A. variabilis weeds have stronger adaptability to environmental stress and considerable potential for future spread implying more serious damage to the livestock industry of desert grassland.
