Abstract: This study experimentally evaluated the effects of cattle grazing on the soil water-heat regime and the above-ground biomass in a meadow steppe community of the Hulun Buir grassland region. We found that the mean soil temperature of the growth season showed an increasing trend with increasing grazing intensity. Grazing imposed different impacts on the biomass and relative dominance values of the three components (Leymus chinensis,Stipa baicalensis and forbs). Specifically, with increasing grazing intensity, the biomass and the relative dominance of Leymus chinensis declined linearly whereas the maximal biomass and dominance values occurred at the intermediate grazing intensity for the other two components. The soil water content had significant positive correlation with the biomass of L. chinensis and forbs, and had weak correlation with the biomass of S. baicalensis. Our findings may provide a new insight in furthering developing the grazing optimization theory and unraveling the intermediate-grazing intensity effects in a broader sense.

Key words: Grazing intensity, Soil water content, Soil temperature, Dominance value, Community dynamics
