Abstract: The effect of two grazing system (continuous grazing (CG) and rotational grazing (RG) and three grazing intensities(HGI(0.467 ha/cow), MGI(0.667 ha/cow), and LGI(0.867ha/cow)) on the milk yield, specific gravity and weight gain for Friesian cows grazed in mixed sward of perennial ryegrass(Lolium perenne) and white clover(Trifolium repens) were studied at Nanshan Ranch, Hunan Province. The total milk vields for RG cows during experimental period were significantly higher than that for CG cows (1632.5vs.1462.3 kg/cow).The total milk yields during experimental period were 1724.5, 1571.1 and 1331.2kg/cow for MGI, LGI and HGI respectively. There no significant differences in average daily gain (ADG) for cows between RG and CG(0.224 vs.0.205kg/cow.d).There were no significant ADG differences between LGI, MGI and HGI, the ADG was 0.242, 0.225 and 0.176kg/cow for LGI, MGI and HGI respectively. There was little difference in specific gravity of milk between different grazing treatments. It is indicated that grazing system and grazing intensity had significant effect on milk yield, though they had no effect on ADG and milk specific gravity.
